Circe
by Madeline Miller · 2018
Born to the sun god Helios but dismissed by the divine court, Circe is exiled to the island of Aiaia after discovering her gift for witchcraft. From there she encounters famous figures from Greek myth—Odysseus, Medea, Daedalus—yet Miller centers the story on Circe's own interior evolution rather than their legends. Across centuries, Circe learns the cost of power, the limits of immortality, and the difficult balance between isolation and attachment. Her magic grows through experimentation and discipline, becoming an expression of agency in a world where gods and men repeatedly seek to control her. Circe is significant for reimagining myth through a feminist and psychological lens. It transforms a once-marginal character into a fully realized protagonist and explores themes of autonomy, motherhood, desire, and the courage to choose a mortal, meaningful life.
